Smile yep 3 is the answer

No. The answer is four

He sold half (2) plus one half. Leaving him one whole melon and one half.

He sold half of them which is 1 & a half, plus half a melon which is 2 and found that he had one whole melon left which is 3

So 3 is the answer  Smile

You believe wrong.

Farmer Joe came to town with some watermelons.
At this point he has 4.

He sold half of them
He now has two

plus half a melon,
He now has one whole melon and one half

and found that he had one whole melon left,
As above. He has one whole melon. And a half.

How many melons did he take to town?
Four.

Although it does work with three as well...

A man decides to buy a nice horse. He pays $600 for it and he is very content with this strong animal. After a year the value of the horse has increased to $700 and he decides to sell the horse. But already a few days later he regrets his decision to sell the beautiful horse and he buys it again. Unfortunately, he has to pay $800 to get it back so he loses $100. After another year of owning the horse he finally decides to sell the horse for $900. What is the overall profit the man makes?

The trick though is he has one whole melon. Not just one melon.

So it's trying to suggest he has more than one melon but only one of them is whole.
